Proposal for ICIG 2017 Special Session on
5G Multimedia Communications

Motivation

Multimedia systems, multimedia services and multimedia applications are becoming a part of daily life in our society, industry, and academia. Meanwhile, intensive research toward 5th generation wireless communication networks are progressing in many fronts. Due to the characteristics of higher mobile data volume, typical user data rate, number of connected devices and lower end-to-end latency in 5G wireless communication networks, new theory and technologies are needed for variety of multimedia data - surveillance video, entertainment and social media, voice and video, medical image, business transactions, internet-of-things-based streams, data associated with network or IPTV user experience, to name a few.

Specifically, in the context of 5G wireless communication networks, there exist challenges of supporting such multimedia information in terms of compression, encoding, transmission, processing, synchronization, storage and mining. Traditional multimedia communication and information processing schemes cannot handle effectively in the 5G enviroment. Therefore, it brings new opportunities to the research community, as there are strong needs to develop effective and efficient approaches and solutions for handling issues in the area of 5G multimedia communications.

The goal of this special session is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in the multimedia communications and multimedia information processing to present their novel and original research. The topics to be covered in this special session include, but not limited to:

● Architectures for 5G multimedia communication
● Security and privacy in 5G multimedia communication
● Multimedia delivery over 5G wireless networks
● Multimedia information processing based on user QoE
● Compressing and coding for the multimedia data in 5G enviroment
● Green computing for 5G multimedia communication
●5G multimedia communication systems designing
● Novel and interesting applications in 5G multimedia communications
